Canada to impose quarantine on travellers returning from Ebola-stricken regions

May 27, 2026News Briefingwww.cicnews.com

Canada will require a 21‑day quarantine for anyone arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda or South Sudan who has been in those countries within the 21 days before entry. The measure takes effect at 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 30 2026 and remains in force until August 29 2026, with the possibility of extension to other Ebola‑affected regions.

Who must quarantine

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, persons registered under the Indian Act, and foreign nationals who have been in any of the three listed countries within the previous 21 days and are asymptomatic.
  • The quarantine period is 21 days, beginning upon arrival in Canada.
  • If a traveller lacks a suitable location for quarantine, the government will provide one.
  • Travellers showing Ebola symptoms will be isolated in a hospital for assessment.

This is the first mandatory quarantine imposed by Canada since the COVID‑19 travel restrictions were lifted in 2022.

Visa and travel document suspension

In a related action announced on May 26 2026, Canada suspended for 90 days the issuance of:

  • Visitor visas (temporary resident visas)
  • Electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs)
  • Permanent resident visas

These suspensions apply to residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. Existing travel documents issued to nationals of those countries will no longer be accepted for entry, and IRCC has paused processing of new applications from these regions. The suspension became effective at 11:59 p.m. ET on May 27 2026.

Monitoring and updates

The government indicated that the measures will be reviewed regularly and may be expanded if the Ebola outbreak spreads to additional areas. Affected individuals are advised to consult Canada’s travel advisories page for the latest information.
