Japan will increase visa fees for foreign nationals from July 1, 2026, affecting short-term visa and entry visa applications submitted through Japanese diplomatic missions abroad.

The Japanese government approved the fee increase under a Cabinet decision announced on June 19.

For applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026:

  • A single-entry visa fee will increase from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen.
  • A multiple-entry visa fee will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said visa fees had not changed since 1978. He said the increase reflects inflation and exchange-rate changes over the years.

When asked about the possible effect on tourism, Motegi said the government had considered various factors before making the decision and does not expect the higher visa fees to have an immediate negative effect on inbound tourism to Japan.

The fee increase applies to visa applications for foreign nationals entering Japan, specifically short-term visas and entry visas submitted through Japanese diplomatic missions abroad.
