Processing times and service standards are different
IRCC publishes processing times to help applicants estimate how long an application may take. These timelines are guidance only and do not guarantee that an application will be finalized within the listed period.
IRCC processing estimates fall into two categories:
- Historical estimates: based on how long IRCC has generally taken to finalize 80% of applications in the past
- Forward-looking estimates: based on current application volumes and IRCC’s processing capacity
Service standards are internal benchmarks for how quickly IRCC aims to process certain application types under normal conditions. IRCC typically aims to finalize about 80% of applications within the relevant service standard.
Some applications may be processed faster, while others may exceed the standard. Delays can result from backlogs, operational limits, or factors specific to an individual file.
Temporary residence processing times are updated weekly. Permanent residence and citizenship processing times are updated monthly. Service standards are reviewed less often; temporary residence service standards were last updated in 2018–2019.
