Common photograph mistakes
- Incorrect dimensions – photos that are slightly off in size or where the face is too small or too large in the frame.
- Out‑of‑date photos – images taken more than six months before filing.
- Missing photographer details – absence of name, address, date, or applicant’s name on the back (paper) or receipt/text file (digital).
- Improper background – coloured or patterned backdrops, or shadows falling across the face or shoulders.
- Glasses or head covering errors – tinted glasses, sunglasses, or head coverings that obscure the face or cast shadows.
- Infant/child photos – failure to follow specific rules (head and shoulders only, no hands visible, appropriate backdrop for newborns).
Items that must not be submitted
- Selfies – self‑taken images do not meet the required standards.
- Cropped images – photos extracted from larger pictures (e.g., vacation or family photos).
- Altered photos – any adjustments to colour, brightness, sharpness, cropping, background replacement, wrinkle smoothing, hair‑colour changes, or red‑eye removal.
- AI‑generated or AI‑enhanced images – treated as altered and therefore rejected.
Ensuring compliance
- Use a commercial photographer or studio familiar with IRCC’s requirements.
- Bring a printed copy of IRCC’s “citizenship photo specifications” page to the photographer for reference.
- After the photo is taken, verify that it meets all size, background, and content criteria before submission.
