Processing times and service standards

IRCC publishes processing times to give applicants a general idea of how long an application may take. These figures are guidance only and do not guarantee that an application will be finalized within the listed timeline.

IRCC uses two types of processing estimates:

  • Historical estimates, based on how long it took IRCC to make decisions on 80% of past applications
  • Forward-looking estimates, based on current application inventory and available processing capacity

Service standards are different. They are internal performance targets used to assess whether application types are being finalized within expected timelines under normal operating conditions. The general target is to complete about 80% of applications within the stated service standard.

Processing times and service standards do not always match. Some applications may be completed faster than the service standard, while others may take longer because of backlogs, operational limits, incomplete files, complex cases, or other case-specific issues.

IRCC updates temporary residence processing times weekly. Permanent residence and citizenship processing times are updated monthly. Service standards are reviewed less often; the service standards for temporary residence applications have not been updated since 2018–2019.
