How Express Entry selection works

Express Entry is Canada’s federal application management system for selecting permanent residents who intend to settle outside Quebec.

Candidates must first qualify for one of the Express Entry-managed programs. They are then assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System score based on factors including age, education, official language ability, and work experience.

IRCC periodically issues invitations to apply for permanent residence to candidates with active profiles. Draws may target top-scoring candidates generally or candidates who qualify under specific selection categories.

Current category-based selection priorities include French-language proficiency and work experience in selected in-demand sectors, including healthcare and social services, trades, education, and transportation.
