A European residence permit can dramatically expand travel access without requiring a second passport, sometimes for as little as €920 per month.

Schengen Zone – 29 countries (25 EU, 4 non-EU) allow free movement with a residence permit; holders can spend up to 90 days in any other member state within 180 days.
Income-based visas – Portugal D7 (€920/month), Spain non-lucrative (€2,400/month); no investment required, aimed at retirees, passive earners, or freelancers. Digital nomad visas for remote workers range €2,850–€3,680/month across Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, and Italy.
Golden visas – Investment-based options exist: Portugal (€250,000–500,000), Greece (€250,000–400,000), Latvia lowest in region; real estate listings qualifying for residency are tracked by IMI.
Additional travel benefits – Schengen residency permits also grant access to 16 non-Schengen European countries (Albania, Bosnia, Georgia, etc.), several Middle Eastern countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman), and the Americas (Mexico, Caribbean islands) under visa-free, e-visa, or visa-on-arrival conditions.
US green card – Grants visa-free, e-visa, or visa-on-arrival access to 52 countries/territories, mainly in the Americas, Caribbean, parts of Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia; does not provide Schengen entry.

Takeaway: For travelers with limited passport mobility, residence permits can multiply your access worldwide at a fraction of the cost of a second citizenship, but they require maintenance, income thresholds, and physical presence.
