Bufori is a boutique luxury vehicle manufacturer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1986, the company relocated entirely to Malaysia following an official invitation from the Malaysian government, including the country’s King and Prime Minister.

The company operates a highly specialized, manual facility located seven kilometers outside of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Unlike mass-market luxury automakers that assemble third-party components, Bufori builds its chassis, bodies, suspension systems, electronic architectures, and interior components fully in-house. Prior to 2020, production averaged between 25 and 35 vehicles per year. While the cars are distributed across 40 countries—predominantly throughout Germany, the Middle East, China, and Australasia—Malaysia remains its smallest market.

Production and Model Lineup

Vehicles are constructed using advanced composite materials rather than standard automotive steel or aluminum. Bufori utilizes a hybrid fabric consisting of carbon fiber and Kevlar, making it the first automotive brand to construct entire vehicle bodies from this combination. The resulting structures are seven times stronger than steel and seven times lighter than aluminum.

Because Kevlar cannot be cut with conventional blades or processed efficiently on automated assembly lines, dry fabrics are manually molded without resin or bonding agents to preserve tight fiber alignment at complex structural curves. Air is then vacuum-evacuated from the molds via specialized manifolds to finalize parts like door skins.

The company’s primary automotive models include:

  • Bufori La Joya: A coupe model featuring customizable gemstone placements (such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, or rubies) directly into the vehicle. Approximately 300 units exist globally, with 12 operating within Malaysia. Due to low production volume, pre-owned units frequently command higher market valuations than new models, even while the vehicle remains in active production.
  • Bufori Geneva: A luxury saloon model configured with high-end amenities. Only 12 units operate domestically within Malaysia.

Mechanical Specifications

Bufori vehicles utilize a 6.4-liter multiple-displacement V8 engine generating 500 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed ZF transmission. The powertrain achieves a fuel efficiency rating of approximately 15 liters per 100 kilometers (equivalent to roughly 16 miles per gallon).

Restorations and Bespoke Engineering

Beyond new vehicle manufacturing, Bufori operates secondary business divisions focused on classic vehicle restoration and modification:

  • Period-Correct Restorations: Vintage vehicles are rebuilt strictly to original specifications, utilizing time-appropriate materials such as braided wiring harnesses and traditional mechanical components rather than modern upgrades.
  • Resto-Mods: Classic cars are restored while simultaneously being retrofitted with modern technology. An example includes a modified 1961 Ford Galaxy configured with current-generation electronic parking brakes, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and updated safety features.
  • Armor Customization: Vehicles can be retrofitted with custom ballistic armor. Available defensive packages include Level 2 protection (designed to stop 9 mm and .44 Magnum rounds), ceramic armoring engineered to stop armor-piercing ammunition, and pressurized cabin systems. This service can be applied both to bespoke Bufori builds and to pre-existing vehicles brought in by clients.

Alternative Powertrain Development

The company does not utilize standard battery-electric vehicle systems due to constraints associated with industrial batteries. Instead, Bufori is developing proprietary alternative propulsion technology that eliminates traditional batteries entirely. The experimental system pairs a specialized combustion engine powered by biofuel (such as cooking oil or sustainable aviation fuel) with a bank of capacitors to store electrical energy for short durations.

Interior Customization and Amenities

Vehicle interiors are designed entirely around custom quality metrics rather than predefined price points. Standard interior materials include genuine European leathers and German or custom handmade carpets.

Automotive upholstery features traditional “tuck and roll” leatherwork, wherein independent foam segments are manually tucked into sewn rolls by local Malaysian craftsmen. This method avoids the rigid, single-piece structural limits of standard modern quilting, ensuring the seat remains flexible and responds to passenger movement. The specific stitching patterns and color palettes are fully customized and never repeated across different vehicles.

Rear-Cabin Features

The rear passenger cabin of the flagship models includes high-end mechanical and lifestyle features:

  • An electronic footrest and fully reclining seats.
  • High-density lamb’s wool floor mats.
  • Custom seating foam constructed to a buyer-specified density level.
  • A specialized $4,000 USD magnetic tea service station featuring an integrated container for spent tea leaves.
  • An on-demand water heating system that produces boiling water ($98^circtext{C}$) in less than two seconds, eliminating the safety risks of storing hot liquids in a reservoir.
  • A localized cabin environmental system equipped with ionizers, air purifiers, and an automated perfume dispenser. The fragrance module connects to the glove box on an adjustable timer, allowing occupants to spray selected colognes or perfumes through dedicated cabin vents via manual button activation.
  • A complimentary set of Snap-On tools shipped inside every custom vehicle.

Logistics and Customs Procedures

International collectors looking to ship their classic vehicles to Malaysia for factory restorations or resto-mod work can utilize temporary importation procedures. By establishing a temporary import bond, vehicle owners bypass standard Malaysian automotive import duties. The full value of the bond is returned to the owner once the completed vehicle is re-exported out of the country, ensuring no tax penalties are incurred during the servicing timeline.
