Processing times vs service standards
IRCC processing times are estimates. They give applicants a general idea of how long an application may take, but they are not guaranteed timelines.
IRCC uses two types of processing estimates:
- Historical processing estimates, based on how long it has typically taken IRCC to finalize 80% of applications in the past.
- Forward-looking processing estimates, based on current application inventory and processing capacity.
Service standards are different. They are IRCC’s internal benchmarks for finalizing certain application types under normal operating conditions. IRCC aims to finalize about 80% of applications within the relevant service standard.
Actual processing may be faster or slower than the service standard because of backlogs, operational issues, or file-specific factors.
Temporary residence processing times are updated weekly. Permanent residence and citizenship processing times are updated monthly. Temporary residence service standards were last updated in 2018–2019.
